May Hunter Cook 1917-2020

My mother, May Hunter (Cookie) Cromartie of Holly Hill, Florida, passed away in Ormond Beach, Florida on December 29, 2020. She was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina on November 17, 1917, the daughter of May Sedberry Cook and John Henry Cook, the former mayor of Fayetteville. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Fayetteville and attended Women’s College of the University of North Carolina in Greensboro. She was the sister of Carolyn Cook Weisbecker, also of Fayetteville, who died in 2008. In 1939, she married Robert Samuel Cromartie Jr. of Bladen County who later owned the Dixie Coal and Oil Company on Russell Street. She was a devoted wife and a loving mother to her two children, Robert Samuel Cromartie III and Carolyn Cook Cromartie Holt.

Survivors include Robert Samuel Cromartie III and his wife Mary Elaine Collier Cromartie of Ormond Beach, Florida and six grandchildren: Robert Samuel Cromartie IV, David Alan Cromartie, and Kimberly Elaine Cromartie Horwedel, all of Ormond Beach, Florida and Christin May Holt Aquilla of Rockville, Maryland and Catherine Lynn Holt Czifra and Susan Elizabeth Holt both of Fairfax, Virginia. Six great-grandchildren include Thor Connor Cromartie, Alexander Drake Cromartie, and Sage Nicole Cromartie of Ormond Beach, Florida and Samantha Jo Aquilla, Jeffrey Thomas Aquilla and Eden Elizabeth Anderson.

A graveside memorial service will be held in Cross Creek Cemetery Number Two on Saturday, June 24, 2021 at ten o’clock in the morning. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 102 Ann Street, Fayetteville, N.C. 28301 in lieu of flowers.

Rogers and Breeze Funeral Home will assist with the process.
