Dr Cromartie, I see no mention of May Hunter Cook Cromartie Whom I am told is living with her retired son Dr Sam Cromartie. Please let me know if you are not the correct person for my research. May Hunter was my baby sitter at one time and I’m tod that she is now 98 years old, (I am 85).

    Kindest regards,

    Alex

Hi Alex: Cookie is still living. She lives in independent living at Bishops Glen Retirement Home in Holly Hill, Florida about ten minutes from my home in Ormond Beach. She is healthy but is having some memory problems. I lived across the street from you in Fayetteville until I was five years old. My sister Carolyn lived in Fairfax, Va until she died of cancer three years ago. I remember your parents and sibs Nancy, and Owen well. I was sorry that they died young. I hope all is well with you.
      Sam

I have been researching my ancestry and came across a connection between my great-great-great grandmother, Rachel Melvin, and the Cromartie (Cromartice) family. I was able to trace back to Bladen County census in 1870.
I would like to know more about what happened to the slaves owned by the family. I am sure there were meticulous records kept since they were regarded as property. It would be great to know why I have an ancestor who’s name is Wm. Cromartie identified as Black.
