The First Patient by Michael Palmer is a thriller about a country doctor, Gabe Singleton, who replaces the President’s physician, who has just disappeared under suspicious circumstances. Gabe discovers that the President is having serious mental issues and faces the decision of whether to initiate plans for his removal from office. Then he comes to suspect that someone close to the President is poisoning him. Soon someone tries to murder Gabe. Alison Cromartie, a nurse who says she is with the Secret Service, saves his life. He wants to seek her help, but can her trust her? I have read all of Michael Palmer’s medical thrillers, and this is my favorite.
