The Expats

The Expats is a first novel for Chris Pavone. Kate Moore sees a chance to redirect her life when her husband Dexter announces that he has received a job offer in computer security from a bank in Europe. It pays so well that she can retire from her job and be a full time mom for her two sons. She gives notice and follows him to Luxembourg where they try to blend in with the expatriate community. This becomes difficult when she discovers that people are following them and that Dexter leads a secret life. He goes to work every day and stays late most nights, but the bank he supposedly works for doesn’t exist. No one in this novel is who he or she seems to be, including Kate who neglected to tell her husband that she had worked as a CIA operative. The author moves effortlessly back and forth through time giving the reader clues leading to dramatic revelations in the final chapters.
