James Cromartie
The first child born to William Cromartie and Ruhamah Doane was James. He was born in Bladen County, North Carolina on March 28, 1767 and died also in Bladen County on June 27, 1845. His first wife was Eleanor Hannah Meredith who died before 1817. Subsequently in 1817 he married Catherine Taylor who was born in Bladen County December 21, 1788 and died in the same county June 15, 1869. She was the daughter of Daniel Taylor and Catherine Kelly. James was buried at South River Presbyterian Church in Bladen County. James owned vast tracts of land in eastern North Carolina as well as land in Leon County, Florida. He invested in the Branch Bank of Cape Fear in Fayetteville, N.C. and in the Wilmington and Raleigh Railroad.
